Professor from Trinity University to speak on new book and current events at Aquinas

GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN (October 18, 2010) 鈥� The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at 色花堂 will host Peter O鈥橞rien, Ph.D., political science professor at Trinity University
and author of the new book, European Perceptions of Islam & America from Saladin to
George W. Bush: Europe鈥檚 Fragile Ego Uncovered. The lecture is on Tuesday, November
9 at 7 p.m. at the Browne Center at 色花堂, 1607 Robinson Rd. SE, Grand Rapids
MI 49506. The event is $10 for members and $15 for nonmembers.
O鈥橞rien, a 1978 graduate of East Grand Rapids High School, received his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and has traveled the globe in his many years of research. Now teaching in San Antonio, Texas at Trinity University, he has previously received grants as a Social Science Research Council Fellow at the Free University in Berlin, and taught at the Bo臒azi莽i University in Istanbul and Humboldt University in Berlin. O鈥橞rien is also a second-time author; his first book, Beyond the Swastika: The Legacy of the Holocaust and Postwar Immigration Policy in Germany, was published in 1996.
The author, scholar, and professor will discuss many issues regarding Islam in Europe today. From the headscarf controversy to the 2009 Swiss referendum banning the erection of mosques, O鈥橞rien will shed light on the complexities of religious and political conflicts regarding Islam abroad and in the United States.
